Hargus Sexton passed away at his home on June 15, 2017 at the age of 96.  Hargus attended Picadome High School, at 13 he milked cows, raised chickens, washed milk bottles and rode the milk truck for .50 cents a day.  He later found a job at A & P grocery story making 12.5 cents an hour to help support his family.  In the 1940's Hargus bought a R.C. Cola route in Owenton, KY.  He worked numerous jobs, one as a bartender in Dayton, Ohio, worked as a teller at Keeneland and Churchill Downs, tended to his dairy cows and bought his first farm.  In the 1960's Hargus met and started working for Julian Walden, the "Bluegrass Seed King" with whom he became good friends and partners in the United Tobacco Warehouse with the help of his good friend Colvin Rouse.  After 60 years, Hargus became known as "Mr. Tobacco", a true friend to the local tobacco farmers.  In the 1960's Hargus started United Beverage Inc. and Hargus Sexton, GA insurance company.  In 1987 he married Sandra Ellsworth and they became very involved in breeding and raising thoroughbred horses.  He became partners with his good friend Julien Walden's grandson Ben P. Walden Jr. with whom he had a great success buying and selling horses.  Hargus and Sandra Sexton have bred over 50 Stakes winning and stakes placed horses including Mo Tom, Morris Code, TheMedic, Corinthian and Gayego to name a few.  Hargus and Sandra are known worldwide as "International Breeders" as proven by the accomplishments of their horses. He will be greatly missed by his good friend Tom Bozarth who was also his Blood Stock Agent.

Hargus is survived by his devoted wife Sandra and daughters Bonnie (Richard) Thompson, Fawn Marks both of Lexington.  Grandchildren Bill (Renee) Casson, Bobbie (Justin) Collins, Bonnie Mize, Kimberly (Tony) Gardner, Robin (Rod) McMahan, Shane (Susan) Farley, Chance (Sharon) Farley, Celene (Bill) Marshall, Mark (Esther) Thompson, Richard (Carol) Thompson, Japheth (Neta) McKinney, Jimathea (Jay) Kirkman, Jenifer (Joel) Roth, Jaman McKinney, Bryce Marks, 31 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.  Preceded in death by daughters Dona (Bob) Casson, Samee (Joel) Topf, Melanie Sexton, Alexis Carter and grandchild Joseph McKinney.

 

Funeral Information

There will be a celebration of Life, Wednesday June 21st at Moss Hill Golf Course, 3495 McCowans Ferry Road, Versailles, KY from 6:00 - 8:00.

Donations Information

In lieu of flowers Donations can be made to Central Kentucky Riding for Hope or Old Friend's Farm.
