Dr. Carl J. Peter

Carl J Peter, PhD, passed away Sept 14, 2017 at age 92. He was born at home in New Baden, IL on Aug 30, 1925, and grew up in Trenton, IL, the son of the late Charles and Margaret (Zapp) Peter. He was married to Vivian (Shrontz) Peter, who preceded him in death.


He is survived by daughters Kathleen Peter, MD (Cindy Davis), Minneapolis, MN, and Caroline Haddad, Bellevue, WA, son David Peter (Ann), Lexington; sisters Dorthy Peter (Billie Ann Camp), Arvada, CO, and Marjorie (Carl) Bopp, Trenton, IL, and grandchildren Sarah and Daniel Peter, and Lawrence Haddad. A sister, Evelyn (Ralph) Thurman preceded him in death.


Dr. Peter had two careers: first as a health educator and executive director of voluntary health agencies in IL, NY, OH, and HI, and second as a university professor at the University of Nebraska, University of Kentucky, East Tennessee State Univ, Western Illinois Univ, and at SW China Normal University. He was active in SOPHE (Society for Public Health Education) and APHA (American Public Health Assoc).  He retired in 1994 as Emeritus Professor & Health Sciences Dept. Chair, Western Illinois University.


Dr Peter was an active member of UK Hospital Auxiliary, visiting heart surgery patients; past President of Bluegrass Mended Hearts; volunteer usher for Lexington Opera House, Actors Guild, Studio Players, Balagula, and Singletary Center, where he was twice honored as Volunteer of the Year. He served on the Board of Directors for a number of Lexington organizations, including the International Book Project, Stonewall Community Association, and Bluegrass Mended Hearts.


Carl graduated from Trenton Community High School in May 1943 and was drafted into the Navy four months later. Placed into Navy V-12 and NROTC programs after Boot Camp in Farragut, ID, he was sent to St Lawrence University, Canton, NY and Tufts University, Medford, MA. He had a BS from University of Illinois, an MPH from University of Michigan School of Public Health, and a PhD from University of Nebraska.


He was very outgoing and enjoyed connecting with people in all walks of life, engaging in conversation and learning about them. He will also be remembered by family and friends for creating personalized greeting cards for any occasion, always containing handmade confetti! A favorite saying was "To teach is to touch a life forever".


Funeral Information

There will be a celebration of Carl's life at 1PM, Saturday, November 11, 2017 followed by a Gathering from 2-4 at Clark Legacy Center in Brannon Crossing.
