Obituary

Samuel H. Bates, Jr., 67, of Lexington, husband of the late Mary LaFrana Bates, died Sunday, November 29, 2009 at his home in Lexington. He was born September 9, 1942 in Jenkins, Kentucky, to the late Samuel Hacker and Gladys Virginia Baldwin Bates.

Mr. Bates was retired from GTE and a member of Gardenside Christian Church, the Robert M. Sirkle Masonic Lodge #954 and the Oleika Shrine Temple. He was also a graduate of Transylvania University, served in the US Army during Vietnam and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary Elizabeth (Bruce) Tolson, Clay City, KY; Virginia Ruth (Jonathan Smith) Bates, Lexington, KY; his son, Samuel H. (Bridgette) Bates, Lexington, KY; brother, Robert Thurman Bates, Whitehall, KY; and 3 grandchildren, Samuel Elijah Bates, Bailey Ann Rose Bates, and Mary Ella Bates, all of Lexington, KY.

Funeral Information

Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Thursday, December 3 at Clark Legacy Center in Brannon Crossing. Funeral service will be 11 am, Friday, December 4, 2009 at Clark Legacy Center, conducted by Rev. Joe Bob Grider, with burial in Lexington Cemetery.
