Dr. Alan Edgar Moulton

March 01, 1938 - July 26, 2017

Lexington, KY

Alan Moulton, Ph.D., 79, died peacefully at home on July 26, 2017, after an extended illness.

For 43 years, Dr. Moulton was a professor of psychology at Asbury College (now Asbury University), in Wilmore, KY. Students enjoyed his jovial teaching approach. He was widely known on campus for standing on his desk while making academic arguments.

Dr. Moulton was a beloved father to two special-needs children. He was often seen walking with them around Wilmore, always with a smile and kind word for those who greeted them. His wife, Yvonne, also retired from Asbury as an English professor and is an expert on C.S. Lewis literature.

Dr. Moulton was a lifelong “Salvationist,” a member of The Salvation Army religious denomination. He grew up playing in Salvation Army brass bands. After his retirement from Asbury, he continued to faithfully attend The Salvation Army in Lexington, KY, as a “Soldier,” or church member.

Dr. Moulton was born in Middletown, NY.  He graduated from Asbury with a major in psychology, and from the University of Kentucky with an M.A. in psychology.  During his time as a graduate student, he wrote to the Academic Dean of Asbury, indicating an interest in acquiring a teaching position. He started teaching at Asbury in 1962 while continuing and completing his Master’s, serving as a graduate assistant at U.K., and starting his Ph.D.

During his ensuing lengthy academic career, Dr. Moulton filled various roles, including Dean of Men, Dean of Students and chair of the Psychology Department. As department chair, division chair and serving on numerous committees, he played an important part in curricular development and establishing college policies.  He gave leadership to the faculty in many different areas of college life. At one point, he served two years as Faculty Vice Chair/Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees. He also served as the Faculty Advisor to Student Government.

Dr. Moulton also served as chair of the Division of Education and Psychology and Director of Freshman Studies for five years. He gave special attention to improving the orientation and advising programs for incoming freshman. One of his first tasks in the role as Director was to propose a comprehensive faculty-advisor and peer-advisor program.

He served on a variety of committees, including: Presidential Search, Provost Search, Faculty Status/ Faculty Personnel, Accreditation Self-Study, Committee on Committees, Academic Policies and Curriculum, Campus Life, Teacher Education, Publications, Discipline and Ad-hoc Hughes Auditorium Renovation.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne; his children, Charlene, Kevin, Sarah Hunt Whitworth (Kent) and Julie Hunt; his grandchildren, Andrew and Margaret; his sister, Joann Stanfield; his sisters-in-law, Juanita Russell, Ramona Turman (Don) and Possie Raiford (Rich); his brother-in-law, Emerson (Alice); his nephew, David “Woodie” Moulton, and many other loved nieces and nephews. His brother, Arthur, died in 2005, and his parents, Lt. Cols. David and Grace Moulton, also preceded him in death.

A worship and memorial service will be Aug. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Wilmore Free Methodist Church, 1200 Lexington Road, Wilmore, KY. Family will greet friends from 9 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.
