Obituary for James William "Jim" Wolcott

Jim Wolcott, 91, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at his home in Frankfort. Born in Edinboro, PA, on June 22, 1927, Jim was the fourth of six children of Floyd Oliver Wolcott and Grace Millspaw Wolcott. He is survived by his wife, Joe Ann Wolcott; a son, James D. Wolcott (Susan), Alabama and a daughter, Grace “Kit” Stone, Frankfort; step-children Sharon Willingham, North Carolina, Randy Givens (Shirley), Arizona; Russell Givens (Cassie), Frankfort, 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

He joined the Army Air Corps at age 17 and served in Germany during WWII. After the war he attended Edinboro Teachers College and Spartan School of Aviation to become a meteorologist. He worked at the Greater Cincinnati Airport Weather Bureau in the early 1950s. For most of his career, from 1956 – 1977, he was a steel salesman and District Manager. Upon retirement in 1977, he became a farmer in Owen County.

Jim began his life of public involvement and civic leadership while living in Louisville (1956 – 1964) where he was instrumental in founding the city of Briarwood, KY and establishing Watkins Memorial Methodist Church. Jim moved to Edgewood, KY where he was active in the Methodist Church and fundraising for the Kentucky Methodist Children’s Home in Versailles. He later moved to Owenton where he was active in the Historical Society, First Christian Church and Library Board. After retiring from farming, he enjoyed being active in the VFW Honor Guard where he participated in over 500 services and was a Deacon and member of the Utterbach Sunday School class at First Christian Church in Frankfort.

Jim was dedicated to service for 38 years in the Rotary Club in Owenton and Frankfort. He was President twice, a Paul Harris Fellow and served on numerous committees such as the Youth Scholarship Fund, Program Committee and was chairman of the Make-Up Meeting Committee.

Funeral services are Saturday at 1 p.m. at First Christian Church, Frankfort. Visitation will be 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the church.

Burial will be at the Frankfort Cemetery with military honors by VFW Post 4075 of Frankfort.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the First Christian Church Youth Fund, Hospice or the Senior Activity Center in Frankfort.
