Obituary for Karen Evaune Haller

Karen Evaune Pack Haller died Saturday, Feb. 3 from complications from the Flu. She was 81. Born in Idaho Falls, Idaho on Sept. 23, 1936, Karen was the oldest child of Lynn and Enid Pack. She attended high school in Glenns Ferry, Idaho and graduated from Idaho State College in 1957, where she majored in English and was active in Theater. There she met, and often shared the stage with, Charles David Haller, whom she married on August 24, 1957. The couple moved to New Orleans, where Karen graduated with a Master’s Degree in English, and David completed a Ph.D. in Theater.

They had two children, Kurt Lindsay and Melissa Elizabeth, and moved from college town to college town before settling in Lexington in 1971, where David taught theater at Transylvania University until his retirement in 1994. Karen worked at the University of Kentucky, the Council of State Governments, then at the Fayette County Clerk’s office, retiring in 1990. After her husband’s death in 2008, Karen moved to Nicholasville to live with her daughter’s family.

She is predeceased by her husband, David, and two brothers, Sherman and Paul. She is survived by two brothers, Ward and Reed Pack of Idaho; two sisters, Johanna Gonzales of Oregon, and Jill Laib of Idaho; her son Kurt (Patricia) Haller of Pleasanton California; her daughter and son-in-law, Melissa (David) Snider of Nicholasville; grandsons Tristan Haller of Oakland, California, Karl Haller of Sunol, California, Wesley Snider, Matthew (Alicia) Snider, Daniel Snider, and Ethan Snider of Nicholasville; granddaughter Hannah (Jason) von Schlutter of Nicholasville; and great-granddaughter Ellie Snider of Nicholasville.

There will be a gathering of family and friends to celebrate Karen’s life from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9 at Clark Legacy Center, 601 E. Brannon Road, Nicholasville, KY. In lieu of flowers, donations in Karen’s honor may be made to Doctors Without Borders.
