Obituary for Harold "Carl" Sumner

Harold “Carl” Sumner, 91, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2019. The husband of Marsha White Sumner, Carl was born June 7, 1928 to the late Albert and Melvina Sumner in Corbin, Kentucky. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he served as an Intelligence Operations Technician and received the Good Conduct Medal. He served in World War II and the Korean War spending time in Casablanca and the Aleutian Islands among other places. After his Honorable Discharge in 1953, Carl began working as a city bus driver in Louisville, Kentucky. After some time, he realized bus driving wasn’t for him and took a position with the bus company’s insurance department, introducing Carl to his lifelong career with State Farm Insurance. Upon retirement after 37 years he accepted a position as president of the Insurance Institute of Kentucky while lobbying for insurance issues in Frankfort. Following his retirement from the IIK, the institute named their award to a legislator that brought honor to his or her position The Sumner Legislative Leadership Award. In addition to his passion for work he also had a love for sports. An official for KHSAA, the ABA professional basketball league, and the Ohio Valley Conference, he traveled between Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. At the ripe age of 74, after 50 years of officiating sports, he hung up his whistle. Carl prided himself with missing as few ball games and practices as possible when it came to his grandchildren. At one point, he broke his leg and became wheelchair bound for a period of time, but still insisted on attending every practice and game. He loved to mow his yard, eat Klondike bars by the dozens, and read. He always had a book in his hand or close by, enjoying westerns and mysteries the most. In his retirement he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from the University of Louisville at the age of 83. Carl had a joke for every situation and loved to laugh. A member of Versailles Baptist Church, Carl had enjoyed spending his Sunday mornings teaching the Senior Mens Sunday School Class. He had a special friend in his beloved cat, Nickel.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, Marsha, Carl is survived by his children, Linda (Toney) Rounsaville, TN, Tracy (Darrell) Courtney, Lexington, Jeff Sumner, IL, and Cathy (Travis) Fritz, Lancaster; grandchildren, Brett and Cody Courtney, Haley and Ben Bruckner; and his step grand daughter Ashtyn Fritz and his cat, Nickel.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Jones and brothers, Justine Sumner, James Sumner, Arliss Sumner, Rondal Sumner, Owen Sumner, and Paul Sumner.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests Memorial Donations be sent to the Woodford Humane Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his honor.
