Obituary for Jeffrey Lynn Stephens

Jeffrey Lynn Stephens, age 64, passed away at his home in Lexington surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, June 4, 2019. Born on May 9, 1955 in Campbellsville, Kentucky to George Houston Stephens and Barbara Stephens Mudd, Jeff was the second of four children.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Lois; children, Chris Stephens (Lindsey), Ashlee Melnyk (Greg) and Jacob Stephens (Stefanie); three grandchildren, Leah, Lucas, and Beckett; and three sisters, Pam Bullock, Kathy Allen (David), and Mindy Cooper (Jerry).

Jeff cultivated a successful career in the Lexington area building industry, where he enjoyed many career-long business relationships, a good number of which then evolved into friendships. But while Jeff was dedicated to always providing quality work, his true source of pride and happiness was his family. In fact, one of his sisters remarked that Jeff was not only a Dad to his children, he was a friend to them.

Both Chris and Jake played soccer and Jeff coached their rec teams and his sons say he never missed a game, a tournament, and was even at most practices. Ashlee’s passion was music, and Lois and Jeff were extremely proud of her participation in the Lafayette High School Marching Band, which won the state championship all four years of Ashlee’s tenure with the band.

When the grandchildren arrived, Jeff made it a point to personally connect with each. He colored with Leah. He orchestrated Saturday morning Donut Dates with Lucas. He tapped Beckett to be his co-pilot during a vacation bumper-car challenge. And he snuggled and told creative “Jeff and the Green Monster” stories to all of them.

Jeff was truly a renaissance man with diverse interests and an endless curiosity. He loved to cook for family and friends, often creating his own recipes. One example is his salsa, which was often requested by all who tasted it. Gardening was a pleasure, and he always planted plenty of tomatoes. (Planning for that salsa again.) And he thoroughly enjoyed designing the landscaping around the Stephens’ home. Jeff also liked collecting rare Kentucky Bourbon, as well as coins, stamps, and sports cards. But if you asked him his greatest pleasure next to his family, he’d undoubtedly say fishing, a joy he passed on to his sons and grandchildren.

Jeff taught all of us who knew him many things. He taught us the meaning of actively caring about and for the people we love by always “being there” for each and every one. He taught us the joy of growing a family and nurturing that family with love and strong values. He taught us the importance of laughing together, crying together, and—every once in awhile—disagreeing, but never disrespecting each other.

But perhaps most of all, Jeffrey Lynn Stephens showed us—through his life—what it means to be a great husband, a devoted father, an extraordinary friend, and a caring neighbor. These were his greatest gifts, and he shared them genuinely and generously.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 PM, Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing, followed by a Gathering of Family & Friends from 2-4 PM at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to TOPS Soccer/LYSA and/or Bluegrass Hospice Care.
