Obituary for Maura Anne Graven

Graven, Maura Anne Clark, 92, wife of the late Clyde Graven, died Sunday, November 4. Born in Louisville in 1925, she was the daughter of the late Rose Keely and Dewey E. Clark. Maura spent her early years in Louisville and Chattanooga, marrying her beloved Clyde in 1943 in Norfolk, Va when his ship, the USS Alabama, came into port during WWII. That began a whirlwind adventure for Maura and Clyde as they lived in 14 cities during their married life, solidifying dozens of friendships along the way. The pair travelled the world and always delighted in discovering new friends, new places and enjoying each other. Maura often travelled with her sewing machine making Christening dresses for friends and her charities.

Maura was always very involved in church and community affairs wherever she lived. She was instrumental in engaging folks with some of the early ecumenical and civil rights dialogue of which she was very proud. Other involvements included board member on the National Council of Catholic Women, President of the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre Spotlighters, President of the Harrison Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Board, Board of Catholic Charities and Birthright of Lexington Board. As part of Birthright, she and Clyde received the ‘Louise Summerhill Award’ for their countless hours of volunteer work. Maura has a street named for her in Lexington’s Palomar neighborhood--- ‘Maura Trace’. She was also an avid reader and accomplished writer, publishing two novels, a children’s book and several cookbooks, the cookbooks an extension of her many years as a professional caterer.

She is survived by her children Mary Beth (Tony) Peddicord, and Sean (Doreen) Graven, grandsons, Brian (Tracy), Aaron (Wendy) and Michael (Dana) Peddicord and four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Alex, Emily and Grace, all of whom she loved dearly. Her extended family were her jewels, with Clyde being her most precious gem. Her brother, Brian Clark, predeceased her.

A celebration of her life will be held at Pax Christi in Lexington on Thursday, November 8th with a Funeral Mass at 11am. Maura will be inurned next to her beloved in the Pax Christi Peace Garden following the service. All are invited to gather afterwards for visiting and lunch at the church. Memorials please to Birthright, Catholic Charities or Pax Christi.
