Obituary for William James Hanna

HANNA William James, 96, widower of the late Jacqueline Cotton Hanna, died
Wednesday, October 10, 2018. From Harrodsburg, Kentucky, he was the son of
the late Edward Price and Evelyn Lewis Houchins Hanna. Called "Boat" by
family and many friends, he was a member of the 1940 Central Kentucky
Conference championship basketball team at Harrodsburg High School. He saw
combat in the Pacific Theater in World War II as a staff sergeant in the
Army. He fought in the battle of Leyte, having landed with his
anti-tank-gun unit in the third wave, along with Gen. Douglas MacArthur.
After graduating from UK, he worked 37 years at the Lexington
Herald-Leader in a variety of editorial and administrative positions,
including city editor, columnist, and editorial page editor; he retired in
1987. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years,
serving as an elder. He was an avid tennis player, a charter member of the
Lexington Tennis Club, and played until age 87. He is survived by five
children, Jim Hanna, Beth Hanna, Mary Hanna, Tom (Cathy) Hanna, and Bob
(Tim) Hanna, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In addition
to Jackie, his wife of 65 years, he was preceded in death by a brother and
four sisters. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday,
October 26, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church, 171 Market Street,
Lexington, Kentucky. Memorials are suggested to the Bob W. Brown House for
the Adult Disabled, 507 Rogers Road, Lexington, KY 40505.
